Western Australia Tiny Home Changes
Western Australia tiny homes can now be occupied for 2yrs with council approval. As of September 1st, the Western Australia government is introducing a new policy which is allowing full time occupancy for a two year period with the option for renewal after the end of that period. This is a huge shift in policy that will help to ease housing supply issues in Western Australia and is a statewide policy. While you still need to seek approval from the council in question, this is a massive change that has been pushed by a range of councils in the state.
You can read more about the specific government policy change here in this WA Government Media Statement.
The Essence of the Policy Shift
While there is obviously a need for greater housing provision, the essence of this change stemmed from the need to help with easing the burden on people who were displaced by disaster or using tiny house solutions during a period of building or renovation. As tiny homes on wheels are classed as caravans though, these more permanent housing options are benefitting directly from these changes.
The opportunity provided to have these more permanent housing solutions offered as effectively permanent living situations open up the market for people who are more suited to Western Australia Tiny Homes for living solutions.
Why Tiny Homes?
Tiny homes have emerged as a practical and sustainable solution to the housing challenges facing many communities today. These compact yet well-designed dwellings offer a range of benefits:
1. Affordability: With housing prices soaring and affordability becoming a pressing issue, tiny homes provide a cost-effective alternative for both renters and homeowners.
2. Flexibility: They can be customised to suit diverse needs – whether it’s for individuals looking to downsize, youth seeking independence, or families wanting additional living space.
3. Sustainability: Tiny homes often have a smaller environmental footprint compared to traditional homes, promoting more eco-friendly living practices.
4. Community Integration: By integrating tiny homes into residential areas, councils are fostering inclusive communities where diversity in housing options reflects the varied needs and wants of residents. This is especially true of Western Australia tiny homes where laws were previously very conservative.
5. Building Efficiency: Tiny homes can be designed and constructed on extremely short timelines (as little as 10 weeks) with extremely sustainable building practices that aren’t affected by weather to the degree of traditional building processes.
A Nationwide Shift Begins
Following on from other councils such as Ballina Shire and Shellharbour in NSW, this is the biggest indication yet that states are beginning to see the value in adopting more flexible and permanent tiny home laws. Traditionally a difficult and conservative state for caravan laws and non-fixed housing, Western Australia enacting these changes is hopefully the start of national adoption.
Council Impact on the State Decision
The impact of council needs on this Western Australia Tiny Homes policy shift cannot be overstated. As per Jane Kelsbie from Warren-Blackwood MLA, there should be a huge “thank you to the Shires of Denmark, Manjimup, and Margaret River for their proactive efforts in proposing and advocating for these much-needed reforms.” Their example is ideal for other councils around the country in the push for reforms.
